AFS Maine Area Team
The Way Life Should Be
Volunteer
Keeping in touch and involved with AFS is a great way for you to make new
friends and continue the intercultural learning experiences that began with
your AFS exchange abroad. Your involvement also helps to further the AFS
mission of creating a more just and peaceful world. You've experienced
how one person can make a difference!

Get Involved locally with AFS
More than 30,000 active volunteers supported by a small staff make AFS
happen in communities around the world. In Maine there are many
opportunities both big and small to work with students and other
volunteers to help support AFS. We would like your help. Some possible
options are:
• Be a liaison for both student and family
• Volunteer at one of our orientation camps both fall and spring
• Help with a local fund raiser whether it is an auction or car wash
• Help the exchange students produce their own yearbook
• Interview perspective students or families
• Help to organize pot luck dinners, picnics, or a trip to a sports game
• Organize an information night at a perspective high school
These are just a few ideas. We welcome your suggestions. Please click
here if you would like to volunteer and someone will contact you. Thank
you for your interest.
Downeast Maine volunteer opportunities
There are always opportunities to become an AFS volunteer with
Downeast Maine. Currently we are also looking for several coordinators
for the Area Team Leadership. If you see a position below that you would
like to help with or want to recommend someone else, please contact
Stephanie Ralph at sralphafs@adelphia.net or 207-626-0779. You can
also click here and use the response form on this website.
Sending Coordinator
The Sending Coordinator is responsible for tracking Downeast applicants
who want to go abroad, making sure that interviews are completed and
providing lists to other team members who need them. The coordinator
disseminates information about AFS programs abroad, financial aid and
fund raising and therefore needs to maintain a sense of teamwork among
the local volunteers working on sending. There is some computer work
(email and list-making), but room for a lot of people work with volunteers
and sending families in this position.
Volunteer Coordinator
I feel strongly that having a successful volunteer coordinator would be a
tremendous boost to the team. Our core volunteers have said for several
years that our greatest need is to find and assimilate more volunteers, so
that there is more time for fun and less stress in the organization. The
volunteer coordinator is responsible for knowing who our volunteers are
and helping them become registered. The coordinator talks with people
interested in volunteering and makes the connections to help them get
involved. The coordinator may work to find opportunities for recent
returnees to participate. The coordinator may arrange for training
opportunities and hold local meetings.
Treasurer
The Treasurer keeps our checking account, pays expenses, reimburses
volunteers for certain expenses, accounts for all funds to AFS National
through monthly reports, and helps us budget our funds.
Cluster Coordinator
This person plans up to 5 enrichment activities for the scholarship
students from Germany and predominantly Muslim countries hosted in
our team.
We have a wonderful group of people to work with and hope you will join
us. We welcome your interest and participation.
